Sociology

Intent:

To engage students with the complexities of society, enabling them to understand how social structures, processes, and relationships shape individuals and groups. To foster critical thinking, empathy, and a curiosity about social issues, preparing students for active citizenship and further study in social sciences.

Through the study of sociology, we aim to broaden students' horizons by exposing them to diverse perspectives, cultures, and ways of thinking. Students will challenge their assumptions, develop a deeper understanding of the world around them, and gain insight into how different societies function, through their exploration of social phenomena on both a local and global scale. This broadening of perspectives encourages students to think beyond their immediate experiences and to become more informed, reflective, and open-minded individuals.

To encourage students to develop their sociological imagination—the ability to view personal experiences within the broader context of societal forces. By examining key topics like education, families, crime, deviance, and social stratification, students will learn to question stereotypes, challenge social injustices, and explore how power and inequality operate within society.

Through the study of core sociological theories such as functionalism, Marxism, feminism, and interactionism, students will develop a strong theoretical foundation. This will be complemented by hands-on experience with research methods, enabling students to investigate social issues and critically evaluate sociological research. Students will build analytical skills that are essential for both academic success and future careers, by mastering both quantitative and qualitative research techniques.
