Edexcel GCSE French

At GCSE we study vocabulary from six themes:

  • My personal world
  • Lifestyle and wellbeing
  • My neighbourhood
  • Media and technology
  • Studying and my future
  • Travel and tourism

We build on the strong grammar base from key stage 3, and extend students’ use of tenses, complex linguistic structures, such as subordinate clauses with a range of conjunctions and infinitive constructions.

All units are enriched by exam techniques and tasks as well as success criteria that will ensure the continuous enhancement of students’ exam practice and knowledge to be successful at their GCSE exam.

Family relationships and marriage

Culture: idiomatic expression about relationships and French wedding traditions

Grammar: devoir (present, future and conditional), present tense, frequency phrases and opinions & justifications

Culture: famous French YouTubers, Instagrammeurs and social media platforms

TV & films / Hobbies and free time

Phonetics: (en/em/an/am), (s/ss/ç), (s/z) & (tion), (ga/go/gu), (j/ge), (in/im/ein), (a/à/â)

Grammar: verbs using object pronouns, opinions & justifications

Culture: French films and actors you should know / cool activities to do and places to go when on holidays in France

Healthy living / French festivals

Phonetics: (é/er/ez), (è,/ê/ai), (a/à/â) & (s/ss/ç), (s/z)

Grammar: modal verbs past tenses (perfect & imperfect tenses)

Culture: French health magazines and social media to follow / French festivals not to be missed

House & home / My area

Phonetics: (on/om), (an/am/en/em), (e/eu/oeu), mute H and E & (s/ss/ç), (s/z), (um), (on/om), (r/rr)

Grammar: present tense (focus on reflexive verbs) imperfect tense

Culture: French DIY TV shows to watch / best French cities to visit

Environment / Future holidays

Phonetics: (é/er/ez), (è,/ê/ai), (an/am/en/em), (i/î/ï) & (o/ô), (o/au/eau), (ou) 

Grammar: near and simple futures, future time phrases, modal verbs + infinitives

Culture: cool holiday destinations in French-speaking countries
