Drama
Intent:
In Performing Arts at Saltash Community School, we encourage every student to be the best version of themselves within a supportive environment. We are an aspirational department and do not stop until students are proud of their work. Within lessons we provide students with the time and support to develop their skills within Music and Drama: as musicians, actors, directors and writers. We study a variety of genres throughout the curriculum to ensure that we are fully preparing our students to go on to study acting and music-related courses at University or Drama School. We also have a strong commitment to supporting our students to develop a wide range of transferable skills. We explicitly teach transferable skills in Performing Arts as these are the skills that will support our young people to go on to become successful and happy adults.
Our vision is to actively engage students in a diverse range of practical activities, workshops, genres, historical events, characters, instruments and rhythms so that students can develop their skills in the below areas:
- Confidence
- Collaboration
- Creativity
- Critical thinking
As students progress through the Performing Arts curriculum, they are offered the chance to revisit and build upon prior knowledge, skills, techniques and methods. We are also committed to removing barriers from our learning, and we celebrate all achievements of our performers. We know that the process of learning a musical instrument can help young people with their motor skills and memory, and we encourage our students to have time to do this in lessons.
We know that we are preparing our students for jobs that do not exist yet and to solve problems that we do not even know are problems yet. So, whilst we endeavour to develop, support and encourage the future generation of Performing Artists and Musicians, we also strive to support students to be creative and empathetic individuals so that they can go on to be confident leaders with broad horizons ahead of them.
