We all joined together as a Community on Friday 20th September to mark Climate and Environment Day. Students were involved in a ‘drop down day’ which involved a number of different activities to both educate and make a stand about Climate Change and the effect on the environment.

Our Year 7 students started their day off with the Real Ideas Organisation presenting to them about social enterprise and examples of how people have created social enterprises that demonstrate care for our environment, they later went on to get involved in designing and creating ideas to solve the large global issue of waste.

Our students in Years 8-11 all had thought provoking presentations by Devon Contract Waste Limited, Church Town Farm Nature Reserve and Saltash Environmental Action. Throughout the day our students were given the opportunity to understand the scope of the environmental concerns and were able to do this by watching the film ‘’The Plastic Ocean’’ as well as taking part in tasks from the Eden Project. Coupled with this the students were tasked with finding, designing and creating solutions to the problems, including their pledges to individually make a difference.

Head of Sixth Form Adam Killeya ensured that our Sixth Form students involved themselves by taking part in a Climate Change Debate, show casing their research and presenting skills.

Throughout the day as well as many learning opportunities, students were able to support by wearing green mufti and raised £690 by doing this; students have nominated charities that they would like the donations to go towards. In addition, the canteen went entirely meat free for the day, students got involved in litter picks, were given the opportunity to plant seeds, make things out of a range of eco-friendly materials, take part in treasure hunts and were able to contribute their ideas about how we could build from the great stand that we made on Friday.

It was an amazing Community event and once again demonstrated the TEAM ethos at Saltash and the wonderful commitment that many of our students have to making a positive difference.
